Battery backup system notes.

So, you’re wondering, what are the power supply considerations for providing battery backup to your network equipment? After investigating this, I can summarize this as follows.

  • Does providing battery backup to only wired Ethernet equipment save energy compared to providing battery backup to only Wi-Fi wireless equipment? Suffice it to say, when the decision is between Ethernet and Wi-Fi, the power savings are minimal, except when Wi-Fi encryption is used, which is explained further in the next points.

  • The main factor to consider when calculating power consumption is the number of computer boards being powered. When speaking of enabling or disabling functions on a single board, the power savings are minimal compared to speaking of enabling and disabling entire boards.

    For this reason, not supporting Ethernet under battery backup power can save you energy if this means you do not need to supply power to as many switches. Either you have one big switch that consumes a lot of energy, or you have multiple switch boxes that together consume a lot of energy.

  • For modern network equipment, the single biggest factor in the power consumption of a board is the power consumption of the computational (CPU, memory) equipment on the board. The more powerful this equipment needs to be, the more energy it must consume, and the more energy must end up being wasted as heat.

    For this reason, not supporting wireless communications under battery backup power mainly saves energy if only for not requiring powering a computationally expensive encryption engine for Wi-Fi security.

    If for wired communications, you only have one switch box, and your Wi-Fi support comes from a different box, not supporting Wi-Fi will save you energy.

Single board computer notes.

So, after some thought, I’m planning on getting the Libre Computer Board latest version in preference to the Banana Pi that supports NAS. I think it will be more important to have the best performance out of my intended single board computer form factor than having a potentially useful feature that I might want to use.

But, the big point in hand is this. What intellectual property issues should you worry about if you are doing a big 3D scanning project? Thanks to the limits of patents, we have a clear list of things that you do not need to worry about, especially if you are scanning older, historic objects.

  • Rule of thumb: if you know the age of the object exceeds the term limit of some intellectual property law in question, its use is unrestricted.

  • Design patents: 14-15 year limit

  • Utility patents: 20 year limit

  • Trademark: Renewable indefinitely. However, its use is permissible under fair use in “photographic” style uses, where the primary use is to convey the look of the object, not to sell it.

  • Copyright: As of 2018, term limit unknown. Legislation has been continually increasing the copyright term limits to a rare number of high-value items from ceding into the public domain.

    Due to the vagueness of copyright law, the correct way to interpret it is from opposite de jure and de facto viewpoints.

    • The de jure viewpoint states that copyright term limits may be 70, 90, or 120 years after the date of publication.

    • The de facto standpoint states that copyright is not enforced on the vast majority of copyrighted items older than 28 years. Only a very rare number of well-known items older than 28 years that are clearly known to have active parties enforcing the copyright on them are covered.

      Also, the type of media in question has a strong influence on the longevity of the de facto copyright.       Furthermore, the de facto standpoint states that for these most popular items, chances are that they may be copyrighted indefinitely, unless and until a court case proves that the original copyright was never valid to begin with.

Keep in mind that there is only a limited time frame of what history logs are kept, so you will not be able to look very far into the history of past logs. Very interesting. So I actually didn’t know until recently that 24-hour format is in fact the most common time format in the world. Apparently my school didn’t provide a reasonably international perspective on this point, focusing rather exclusively on local time standards in this regard.
