Yanny or Laurel part III

Now there’s a caligraphic version of Yanny and Laurel.

Now, about the “dress” one. First of all, this photograph is not even correctly white-balanced. So color comparisons cannot be made. The question is what color is the dress, not what color is the reflected light from the dress. That is the key distinction, which is why proper white balance is paramount.

So, this robot dog is not trying to compete with real dogs in sense of smell.

So, you’re wondering what it takes to create a compiler for small 8-bit systems? For small 8-bit systems, a mixed mode compiler is ideal: byte code plus native machine code. Byte code is required for compact program representation with large amounts of source code, whereas native machine code is required for highly optimized tight inner loops.

So, using a DSLR camera, my Pentax K-1 DSLR body and 1980s 50mm SMC Pentax prime lens to be specific, has been an interesting journey. First of all, I’ve been impressed with the volume of photos I”ve been able to take. I’ve quickly reached over a thousand photos of my documents. Now I want to flip through those pages on a larger computer screen to look at what I have.

The one permanently fixed standard: HTTPS.

But in name only! Due to security considerations, HTTPS can never be fully backwards compatible, as all older secure communications standards are now insecure in the present-day. HTTP, the non-secure variant of HTTPS, is no longer largely used because so many popular online services require a login, and user credentials must be kept secure.

So, what is HTTPS in principle?

So, here is more information about this Yanny or Laurel thing. The sound recording was not well done, so it has some high frequency echoes of the low frequency sounds. Depending on the speaker system used to listen to this, the gains on the frequencies will be different such that you can hear either Yanny or Laurel. Also, you can separate out the sounds. The low frequency is around 200 Hz, the high frequency is around 3000 Hz to 6000 Hz, which creates an interesting effect as both are at the far sides of human hearing where the perceived intensity will be lower than the middle frequencies. Also, humans are trained to listen for human voices and filter out other sounds, so this also factors into play as to what different people will hear when listening to this. Younger listeners tend to hear Yanny more often than older listeners, for several reasons mentioned above, and the fact that older listeners will have a more attenuated response on higher frequencies compared to younger listeners.

LinkedIn is a very weird site in the modern era. You can access the contents of it without logging in by means of search engines, but you cannot view the cached pages from search engines.

Reflections on scanning speed

With a DSLR camera, the time it takes to page through documents is the limit on your scanning speed. Paging through by hand, 2 seconds per page is about as fast as you can get. Scanning full-sized papers actually isn’t much faster than scanning film negatives. And definitely for film negatives, most people will want to page through by hand rather than using some very expensive machine that may still come with a greater risk of damage to the negatives.

As for paper documents, you may go faster with an automatic document feed. Of course, the risk assessment is up to you, whether you are okay risking damage to the documents when they run through the ADF at speed, versus slower but safer paging through by hand.

Punch-down tool for installing Ethernet cabling? Oh, there are jacks that do not require punch-down tools. But don’t bother. They are much more difficult to use than the traditional punch-down tool install method.

Beware of brand incompatibility between punch-down tools, though. Not all blades are the same length.

  • However, there are interchangable blade punchdown tools.
