First blog for all Quorten's blog-like writings

Interesting finds here. So, the GnuBee? It turns out that it is not quite as libre-friendly as would be ideal.

Also, this is an interesting article on switchdev. So, I wasn’t quite aware of this: for a long time in the earlier Linux days, there was no official kernel API support for controlling network switch hardware. In the earlier days, so-called “Linux” compatible network switches actually used proprietary blob drivers to control the advanced switch hardware’s features such as VLANs. But, the addition of switchdev to Linux has created a standard interface to be able to do these things without the need for proprietary blobs, so long as the corresponding Linux drivers are available.

What is Windows vShadow? A volume shadow copy system for Windows. Interestingly, Windows vShadow can be a security risk, used as part of an exploit. See here for an example.

Solid-state memory

Solid-state memory? What does Wikipedia have to say about this? Oh, interesting. So the most interesting point in hand is the positioning on archival use of solid-state memory. First of all, we do know from first-hand experience from BIOS firmware that solid-state memory does last quite a long time, even without refreshes. However, according to Wikipedia, for larger capacities of solid-state memory, errors can occur after only 1-2 years in storage. Solid-state memory retention is more reliable when powered on and wear-leveling is continously operating. Also, solid-state drives tend to have the same failure rates based off of age, more so than the intensity of use. The article on longevity is from the year 2015.

Why do mushrooms have caps?

Why do mushrooms have caps? The caps or heads have gills on the bottom of them, and the primary purpose of that is to distribute microscopic spores so that the mushroom fungi can spread.

Nowadays, with the proliferation of tablets, smartphones, video recording, social network, and television channels, surely the average American no longer thinks that being on TV is special anymore, correct? Well, let’s see what information we can find on this.

Failed search.

20180827/DuckDuckGo no longer special to be on tv

On, the other hand, I found this really interesting article on why 3D TV is dead. Why? Well, the only reason why 3D TV was introduced was due to the hit Avatar movie also being a hit 3D movie. There were also other technical issues too, such as the recent digital television switchover decreasing the likelihood of purchasing a new television so shortly after.

One of the biggest problems, however, in recent years is that the newer standards, 4K and HDR, do not support 3D, despite HDR and higher brightness televisions coming with improvements that would help 3D. So, that makes it even harder for 3D to make a comeback. Fundamentally, people are only interested in 3D on projector displays due to the wide angle viewing afforded by the setup. It’s not very interesting on a screen as a screen is more like looking through a window.

"Concentrate"

“Concentrate”? What does Wikipedia have to say about that? Oh, interesting. First of all, the first few times searching, you get directed to chemical articles or similar. So then I try “concentration,” and indeed, I can finally get to the target article through a disambiguation page. Indeed, one of Wikipedia’s biases are showing clearly here.

So, some of the most key interesting points learned here:

  • We already knew children have less attention control than adults. However, elders can have less attention control than younger adults.

  • Attention control generally decreases across all mental disorders, especially executive control; that is, sensory conflict resolution.

Image hosting on GitHub pages? What does a web search have to say about that?

20180827/DuckDuckGo github pages photo hosting

So, there is this suggestion of using GitHub issues as a clandestine way to host images on GitHub, but I don’t like it. There is also a recommendation to simply upload your files into a GitHub repository and use that as web hosting file space, so long as the files are less than 25 MB, but I don’t like that either. It’s designed to host code, not arbitrary files.

This is a very interesting and informative article on how to efficiently host your Hugo blog in GitHub pages.

This is an interesting comparison article between Hugo and Jekyll. The notable omission from Hugo? It doesn’t yet support plugins. However, Hugo is still much faster than GitHub at page generation.

Digital video? What does Wikipedia have to say about that? Oh, Wikipedia has a pretty good and interesting history section on the subject.

20180826/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_video

Again, I reiterate, because this is important! Yes, indeed it is serial digital interface (SDI) that is not found on most consumer equipment because it is uncompressed, and various licensing agreements often prohibit the use of uncompressed video signals for consumer use.
