So, reflecting upon standards in the computer industry. Was it Google that needed to be kum-by-yayed and have gourmet garden visits in order to adopt the standard. It was indeed Google Native Client that was the reason they were reluctant to adopt the standard, correct? Well, let’s see. We can check Wikipedia. Of course, Wikipedia won’t tell you the exact reasons why, but they will tell you if the technology is still in use or not. And indeed, Google Native Client was discontinued, deprecated in favor of WebAssembly.

So, you’re wondering about the Colemak keyboard layout? It’s actually not that esoteric, it’s designed to be almost like QWERTY but with only a few modifications.

Can aluminum foil be recycled?

So, you’re wondering, can aluminum foil be recycled? Yes… under some conditions.

  • The aluminum foil must be clean.

  • The aluminum foil must be crumpled up into a larger ball, at least two inches in diameter, not left as a sheet.

  • Your recycling service must state that they are capable of recycling aluminum foil. If not, you’ll have to mail it into a recycler that is capable.

  • Note that plastic wrap cannot be recycled, unlike aluminum foil. Also, aluminum foil is easier to reuse at home.

  • You can buy aluminum foil made from 100% recycled aluminum. This is especially helpful when there is some aluminum foil that you cannot recycle.

ReFS? Is that going anywhere?

I’m still not sure. However, if plans to not only include it in the “consumer” Windows versions, but also make it the default, pan out, then that means we should for sure start seeing third party GNU/Linux filesystem tools start rolling out.

Now, this is interesting. WinFS and Cairo are failed filesystem projects by Microsoft of times past. The problem? Microsoft wanted to make the filesystem like an “object store” or “a database,” but in the end the traditional filesystem was always there, and the database-like features and functions were merely an additional software layer added to the mix.

Swimsuit preferences

So, this got me wondering. A coworker was talking to another coworker about going to a pool party. “What swimsuit should I wear? One piece or two piece?” she asked. Ah, seemingly a silly question… wear whatever swimsuit you like, right? However, one of the reasons for asking was because she was unsure of whether one decision might be… “incorrect.”

Again, I reiterate, because this is important!

For nice sharp photos on your modern 8K UHD DSLR camera, use a prime lens. In particular, use a prime lens with a focal length longer than your camera mount’s flange distance. If the focal length is shorter than the flange distance, then that means that the lens will have extra optical surfaces inside to compensate by means of a “reverse projection,” even if it is a prime lens. Thus, longer focal length prime lenses guarantee that the lens is as optically simple as possible, and therefore will provide the best possible photographic quality, especially in terms of sharpness.

Next least ideal is prime lenses of shorter focal lengths.

Least ideal are zoom lenses and macro-zoom lenses.

More optical surfaces mean more places for image quality to degrade, and more places that need to be anti-reflective coated to compensate.

Is there any purpose, then, for using the lenses with less ideal optics on a DSLR camera? Why not just use a smartphone or point-and-shoot in that case? Well, as it turns out, the larger apertures and larger, higher-resolution sensor still do provide advantages over the cheap cameras. Particularly, even though you won’t get better resolution, you will be able to get lower noise floors than the cheap cameras… which does amount to better practical resolution, even if by pixel dimensions there would otherwise be no improvement.

  • First of all, the best lesson to be learned up front. A smart home can only be as smart as the homeowner. Yes, in an ideal world, a home could be smarter than its owner, but for the time being, we have to rely on this unifying assumption: if the homeowner doesn’t do at least some kind of maintenance, even as simple as calling another professional to do the maintenance, then things are going to run downhill and become dumb again.

A good smart home water metering system is an analog coupled system. Connected directly each water consumption endpoint is an analog pressure meter with an analog electrical hookup for smart monitoring. There can also be a similar analog flow meter. Earlier I wrote about using sound metering as a cheap way to monitor for events such as when water faucets are running. Why doesn’t sound metering work? It can get false positives if someone is watching a video on a smartphone with the sound of running water, nearby the faucets.

For the flow meter. The flow meter can have an electrical output where dynamo energy is generated. Well, I should put it as that is how the flow meter monitoring works!

And finally ad wear-out, it has too happen after too aggressive a tactical marketing campaign. Or after even overly humorous marketing campaigns.
